I've just found this Ning page recently and it looks like you're sharing some important ideas about building on-line communities. I've led a non-profit in Chicago that is building face-to-face and on-line communities.
We operate a tutor/mentor program called Cabrini Connections, which enrolls about 80 7th to 12th grade teens and 90 volunteers each year. Students and volunteers meet at least once weekly at our center in Chicago. We… Continue

While drifting through my Friendfeed account I discovered a funny little thing that made me realize something big is happening.
I present to you Conan’s sword and by Crom, it’s an impressive one. This sword is the original used in the movie and this picture was shot in the Californian Governor’s office.
So, what’s so unusual about this?
As you all know (or don’t) Governor Schwarzenegger is very active online. The socially savvy Governor has about 1 million followers on Twitter and has just st… Continue

I've never moderated in a social environment before. But I put up a blog post on “Social Media Today” which is attracting a lot of comments and, by default, have ended up moderating them. It’s really fun but I’m not sure I’m doing such a great job.
When I see a new comment come in I'm torn between being supportive of some great posts vs. wanting to introduce new ideas myself. Putting up new ideas kind of implies that the ones others have added aren’t that great. But I can’t complement everyone.… Continue

Nothing is a waste of time if you use the experience wisely. “ -Rodin
I sat down to read Angela Connor’s “18 Rules of Community Engagement: A Guide for Building Relationships and Connecting With Customers Online” with a work like focus – armed with pen and paper. Before long, I found myself not wanting to take notes and smiling as I read. This was simply too enjoyable to confuse with work. Angela has captured so much in this book – from reflecting on her own experiences and providing insights i… Continue

Progress is never linear - regardless of how well we strategise and plan the way we move forward in building and developing communities there is always that sense of pushing through to a new positive and then finding that there are other challenges that need meeting and finding that progress seems to come to a halt. It needs a heap of resilience and patience to keep on going.
Resilience is a great attribute - it isn't the same as drive and doggedness in pursuing goals - it is about being able t… Continue

CRM initiatives were designed to improve internal practices, collect consumer insight and encourage more personalized interactions. Why did they fail? What lessons can be learned so that Social Media initiatives won’t suffer the same fate?
In early 2000, ther… Continue

The 1989 film Field of Dreams is about a farmer in love with baseball, particularly glorious past teams such as The Chicago White Sox. Shoeless Joe Jackson was banned for throwing the 1919 World Series. One day the farmer (Kevin Costner) hears a voice, "If you build it, he will come." The allure of the movie is the climactic fantasy near the end when Costner builds a ball diamond in his corn field.
My question is: one may have the greatest idea for an online community, and build an in… Continue
Following Martin's recommendation, this week we've interviewed Patrick O'Keefe. Patrick is the author of Managing Online Forums and the founder of the iFroggy Network. Patrick is responsible for over 100,000 members across a multitude of networks.
1. Hi Patrick, can you tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Patrick O’Keefe and I own the iFroggy Network. It’s a n… Continue
I'm really getting psyched you guys! I logged on to my social media site I run, DanvilleBusiness.ning.com, to find the director of the Young Women's Leaders Program joined today! She said she wished she'd known about the site earlier.
"Founded in 1997, the Young Women Leaders Program (YWLP) is a psychoeducational mentoring program that empowers middle school girls to be leaders by combining the benefits of one-on-one mentoring with targeted group activities for a year. During the year, each… Continue
I am at my wits end with some of the photos members of my community are posting in the wee hours and sometimes during the day. It is really over the top. I feel as though I have been overly lenient and given way too many chances because some people just don't get the message. Unlike some of you, I do not have a team of moderators for my site. I have a team of moderators for the comments on news stories on WRAL.com, but not on my community site,… Continue
Who are the top guys for online community news? Where would we find the latest source of community news?
Guy Kawasaki, Jeremiah Owyang and Jack McKee would probably be up there. Each has community experience with huge brand names. But they are internally focused, not external.
We can do better. Much better.
We can make Commania the source of news about… Continue
For such a new community, we've done remarkably well. I think these are our top 3 achievements.
1. 40% organic growth. We have over 120 members, about 60% from the original blog/twitter posts and the rest from your efforts Matt Cheney, Tom Ewing, John Norris and many more of you have done a brilliant job of finding brilliant community builders and bringing them into the community.
2. Most Active Community. Even better, we are the most active online community for communi… Continue
