I agree with most of the above. Just make sure that the community features you believe you want are actually the community features your community will use. The mismatch happens so often. Organizations create feature-rich communities when members ...

250 registered users is a decent start. Gradually things get better - but it's a gradual process. I'm usually against hiding content behind a login. Does that benefit users or benefit you? Usually when you try to benefit yourself you end up hurt...

Interesting conversation. Maybe it would help if we defined the word "community"? What is a community? How do you know when you have one?

Aren't "facebook users" a community of interest, at least? A "how to" article on, say, "optimising your facebook privacy settings"would be of interest to this community but not to the community of "electrical engineers", for example. (although whe...

Up at 5:00am - check in on Big White Wall, deal with any issues on the cms generated in the UK and US (it will be 8pm in London). 7:00 am weekday tip my children out of bed and juggle breakfast, school lunches, make coffee. 2 days a week I am drop...

Profile Information

What's amazing about you?
I'm the author of FeverBee (www.feverbee.com), former Seth Godin apprentice and currently work with BAE Systems to develop an online community for law enforcement/SWAT teams.
Are you a member of any communities, online or offline? Which?
I'm an active member of several communities. The Personal MBA community, the community of community builders, Seth Godin's community and a very small, but powerful, community of people I share my building with.
Are you looking for community work? Or to hire anybody?
My schedule is filling up for this year, so drop me a line within the next few weeks if you want my help.

I'm looking for two other talented community builders to work with on a project this summer.
Who would you most like to build a community for? i.e. What is your dream community project?
This is it, bringing talented strangers together to validate our way of building communities by focusing on people, not technology.

Patrick O'Keefe: Be Creative and Experiment

Following Martin's recommendation, this week we've interviewed Patrick O'Keefe. Patrick is the author of Managing Online Forums and the founder of the iFroggy Network. Patrick is responsible for over 100,000 members across a multitude of networks.

1. Hi Patrick, can you tell us a little about yourself?

My name is Patrick O’Keefe and I own the iFroggy Network. It’s a n… Continue

The top source of community news

Who are the top guys for online community news? Where would we find the latest source of community news?

Guy Kawasaki, Jeremiah Owyang and Jack McKee would probably be up there. Each has community experience with huge brand names. But they are internally focused, not external.

We can do better. Much better.

We can make Commania the source of news about… Continue

Our Top 3 Achievements

For such a new community, we've done remarkably well. I think these are our top 3 achievements.

1. 40% organic growth. We have over 120 members, about 60% from the original blog/twitter posts and the rest from your efforts Matt Cheney, Tom Ewing, John Norris and many more of you have done a brilliant job of finding brilliant community builders and bringing them into the community.

2. Most Active Community. Even better, we are the most active online community for communiContinue

An interview with Martin Reed

Martin Reed is unique amongst us community builders. He doesn't have any client overlords to answer to. Margin finds popular niches needing a community, develops the community and monetizes his work. He currently runs JustChat,… Continue

Hi Rich, I really liked your Winning over hearts and minds post on your blog and Seth being in London yesterday made me think of our time in New York. It'd be good to meet up again when/if you're around in London. Keep up the great work! Best, Anne

Richard,
No need to explain. Carol is a good friend and so I feel duty bound to tease her ;-) I think she secretly likes being a pig (hehe).

Rich - what's the guidelines on blog posts on Commania: there are a couple of bits of content I've been directed to recently that I'd love to share - can I just blog away?

Hi there. Yes, I suppose I do just jump in.. A community manager can't be shy about starting or participating in conversation! :)
Thanks for suggesting the group. And yes, to answer your question, I have done a lot of community work throughout the years. Both for myself and health related companies/non-profit organizations.

Hi, Rich. Thanks for the welcome. I've been quite involved in Triiibes. Look forward to seeing how things work, and hoping I can be of help as well as learn!
